We all know Francis Bacon as well-known British philosopher who first said “Knowledge is power”. And in fact, we often ignore that he is also a good scientist. I think one of his contributions are the most primitive glasses we ever knew.
It was back to the mid-13th century, at that time Bacon always saw some people couldn’t see words in books clearly, and his kind heart filled with compassion decided to create something for those people. Therefore, he began to try, but failed many a time.
One day after a heavy rain, Bacon took a walk in the garden. He observed the beautiful sceneries while wondering as usual. Then he founded there were several drops of rain on the cobweb shining in the sunlight. “How lovely!” He thought and leaned over to see them. Suddenly, he was surprised to catch up a strange phenomenon: through the drop of rain, the leaf vein was much bigger than ever; even the fuzz on it was showed clearly!
He was so excited and hurried home to make a thorough search for a crystal ball, but with it he was still not able to see the words on the book very clearly. Nevertheless, what a clever man he is! He ran to find out a diamond and a hammer, cut off a piece of glass from the crystal ball. He held his breath approached a book with the glass: thank godness，the words were enlarged indeed! Then he found a piece of plank, dug a hole and fit the glass over it. Finally, with a handle put on it for convenience, the primitive “glasses” appeared! Proved true again that the more you observe, the greater you are.
Later this kind of glasses was continuously improved by people, and eventually became the glasses we used today. Nowadays with the invention of televisions, computers, and something like these, more and more people have to wear glasses in order to complete works or studies efficiently. And glasses now are no longer that simple. We almost have all kinds of glasses for different people such as ski glasses, basketball glasses, criminal locator glasses, contact lens, even self-modulation glasses and so on.
The development of science brings us so many advantages. When you read books or play computers with your glasses, do not forget Bacon, the great British philosopher and scientist!
